Christmas experience is different for each nationality. For example I can tell you that if I stayed in London for Christmas, it wouldn’t be the same. Yes, well, my challenge would sure be much easier but “easy” isn’t always the best road to take on a journey of self-improvement.
(This blog post is titled SARMA RECIPE but I encourage you to read on. It’s all about being honest. Especially as I’m hoping to inspire people with my challenge. Being honest to others might look difficult but the biggest challenge is being honest with myself.)
SARMA is a traditional cooked Balkan dish. Filling contains pork meat, dried pork, rice, and spices rolled into full (fermented) Sauerkrat (cabbage) leaves.
Fermentation is taking the carbohydrates of those vegetables and turning them into lactic acid. Lactic acid breaks food down making it easier to digest. The resulting product is full of digestive enzymes and beneficial bacteria. Lactic acid stimulates your digestive system to make it function as it should.
Yes, COOKED!! Ha!
This was THE Challenge!
Making RAW VEGAN SARMA.
Here’s how I went about it:
FILLING

– tempeh
( I used TOFU as they sell no tempeh here)
– small onion, finely diced
– chopped fresh chives & parsley
– garlic
– organic raw coconut oil
– paprika powder
– chili peppers
Dice all the vegetables, add crushed tofu, coconut oil, paprika powder, bit of Himalayan Pink Salt and leave to marinate for 1 hour
In the meanwhile put the pine nuts into a bowl of warm water and leave it to soak for 1 hour too.
After 1 hour…
Put pine nuts, sesame seeds and cauloflower in a food processor or Vitamix and watch it turn into a thick potato like mash, gradually adding bit of water. I cannot tell you exact measurements of all my ingredients as I use my gut. It was ok so far!;)
MASH
– soaked pine nuts
– sesame seeds
– apple cider vinegar
– feferoni
– nutritional yeast
– cauliflower
Empty mash into a bowl and add chopped feferoni, chopped sauerkraut, nutritional yeast, apple cider vinegar, some salt and pepper.
Once the tofu has marinated, place 1 spoonfull of meat like tofu onto the middle of the sauerkraut leaf and hug it first from top, then from left and right side and last, just roll the remaining part round the baby SARMA roll. Place all the rolls on a plate and sprinkle some paprika powder over.
It was day 13th, another 112 days left. Till this moment I haven’t actually counted remaining days. It’s not about that! My reason for doing this challenge is to cleanse:
FIRSTLY my INNER BEING, my soul
SECOND, physical side of me, my body.
That’s why I have to be honest to whoever is reading this and say I broke the challenge last night after my raw dinner. I didn’t even crave my mums cake, nor was I hungry. It was there, I ate it, and I didn’t even like it. I have certain food intolerances so I had an allergic reaction to it also. Made me feel so disappointed with myself!!
Today most of the day was a juice detox day until raw dinner.
An angel, a friend of mine wrote me a sentence that stuck with me:
“ITS NOT ABOUT HOW MANY TIMES WE FAIL BUT HOW MANY TIMES WE PICK OURSELVES UP AND KEEP GOING.”
Yes I’m continuing the challenge. In an honest way.
I am a failure yes BUT I love the looser in me because that looser helped me to recognize the winner, that was in hiding.
I wanna do good to myself & good to anyone reading this by possibly inspiring you to see obstacles as blessings.
Change is the only constant fact in our lives.
I choose to accept it as my friendly companion.
Till next time
Ruby
